Trump's speech primarily served as a platform to promote the SAVE America Act, a set of controversial election law changes. The act includes a requirement for proof of citizenship to register to vote, a move that has faced skepticism from some Senate Republicans. It's clear that Trump is leveraging this issue to maintain political relevance and rally his supporters.
One of the more sensational claims involves China's alleged acquisition of 220 million U.S. voter registration files. However, this information is already publicly available, and China's access to it is not inherently nefarious. What's more, there's no evidence that China or any other country manipulated the 2020 election results. The U.S. intelligence community's assessment supports this, stating that no foreign actor altered any technical aspect of the voting process.
Trump's assertions about noncitizen and dead voters are equally dubious. While there have been instances of noncitizen voting, they are extremely rare, and the Brennan Center for Justice found only 30 suspected cases out of 23.5 million votes in 42 jurisdictions. State-level audits further confirm the rarity of such occurrences.
The former president's claims about voting machines being vulnerable are also misleading. Experts emphasize the security measures in place, including physical security, lack of internet connectivity, and paper ballot backups. The 2020 election in Georgia, for instance, involved three separate counts, all confirming the same result.
What's concerning is Trump's continued efforts to undermine public trust in elections. The declassified National Intelligence Council memo warns of foreign adversaries making exaggerated claims to erode confidence.
