The Gujarat Titans' IPL final loss to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru was a result of a bold tactical decision made by head coach Ashish Nehra, as revealed by Jos Buttler. Nehra's move to promote Nishant Sindhu ahead of Buttler in the batting order backfired, leading to a series of unfortunate events that ultimately contributed to the Titans' defeat.
Buttler, known for his calm and composed demeanor, described the situation as a 'reactive' decision made by Nehra. The England star explained that the coach's thinking was to give Nishant a greater role in the game, as the youngster had often been pushed down the order or left with little opportunity to bat. However, this move seemed to disrupt the team's rhythm, as the Titans struggled to find their footing from the very beginning.
The problems started early when captain Shubman Gill was dismissed for 10 in the third over. This prompted Nehra's tactical adjustment, which, unfortunately, did not yield the desired results. Nishant managed 20 runs before being dismissed in the eighth over, and the innings lost momentum. Buttler, who was preparing to walk out after the early dismissal of Shubman, admitted that he was caught off guard by the decision.
"When the first wicket went down, I got up to put my helmet on. But Ashish Nehra said, 'You sit back down, we are going to send Nishant in at 3'. I did ask him after the game, and he just said it felt reactive at that point, and it was a good chance to get Nishant in the game as he's a top-order batter," Buttler revealed on the For The Love of Cricket Podcast.
Buttler's own performance in the final was also under scrutiny. He failed to provide the innings Gujarat Titans needed, scoring only 19 from 23 deliveries. The England star admitted that he never got the boundaries and was outsmarted by Krunal Pandya's bowling. Buttler's disappointment was evident, as he expressed that going worse than a run-a-ball in an IPL final is not a good look.
This incident raises questions about the fine line between tactical innovation and disruption in cricket. While Nehra's decision to promote Nishant may have been well-intentioned, it highlights the importance of maintaining a balanced and cohesive team strategy. The Titans' loss serves as a reminder that even the most calculated moves can backfire, and sometimes, sticking to a familiar lineup can be the safer and more effective approach.
