Sumrall believes that the current schedule, which places the championship game in late January, disrupts the balance between football and academic responsibilities. He suggests that the season should be moved up by a week or two, ending closer to the beginning of January. This would create a more harmonious relationship between the academic and athletic calendars.
The coach also highlights the inconsistencies in the current system. For instance, the high school signing date was moved to early December to protect high school students from transfer issues, but the Transfer Portal window was subsequently moved back. Sumrall questions the logic behind these changes, suggesting that they create a scattered and messy schedule.
Sumrall's ideas, however, face a significant challenge. The dates for the upcoming seasons' College Football Playoff and the 2027 CFP have already been announced, meaning any changes would only take effect in 2028 at the earliest. Despite his concerns, Sumrall advocates for a realignment of the academic and football calendars to create a more balanced and efficient system.
