The United States has a hidden treasure trove of lithium, a critical resource for our modern world, buried beneath the Appalachian Mountains. This vast deposit, estimated to be around 2.3 million metric tons of lithium oxide, could meet the nation's needs for nearly 330 years. The discovery, made by the US Geological Survey (USGS), highlights the potential for the US to reclaim its mineral independence and reduce reliance on imports. This is particularly significant given the rapidly growing demand for lithium, which is essential for lithium-ion batteries that power our smartphones, laptops, electric vehicles, and grid-scale energy storage systems. The USGS scientists, using a combination of geological and geochemical data, estimated the lithium reserves and their economic feasibility. They identified areas in the northern and southern Appalachian regions, with Maine, New Hampshire, and parts of Vermont in the north, and the Carolinas in the south, as the most promising locations. The northern region could provide 900,000 metric tons of lithium oxide, while the southern region holds a potential of 1.43 million metric tons. This abundance of lithium could supply the world with 60 smartphones per person or laptops for a millennium. However, the challenge lies in the extraction process. The journey of this lithium from the Appalachian Mountains to our devices is a long one, spanning over 300 million years since the formation of the supercontinent Pangea. Despite the vast reserves, the US still faces the task of developing efficient extraction methods to harness this resource sustainably. The discovery also underscores the importance of continued research and exploration in the US. With the world's demand for lithium projected to skyrocket by 2040, the US must ensure it has a reliable supply. This study, published in Natural Resources Research, serves as a reminder that the US has the potential to become a major player in the global lithium market, but it requires careful planning and investment to make this resource accessible and environmentally sustainable.
