European Countries, Including UK, Lose Measles Elimination Status (2026)

A concerning development has unfolded in Europe, with the World Health Organization (WHO) announcing that the United Kingdom and several other European nations have lost their measles elimination status. This news comes as a result of a significant rise in measles infections across the continent.

Spain, Austria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan have also been affected, prompting the WHO to emphasize the importance of increasing vaccination rates, especially among vulnerable populations. Measles, a highly contagious disease, can be entirely prevented through vaccination. However, it is one of the first illnesses to make a comeback when vaccination rates drop.

Health experts have raised the alarm about the increasing outbreaks of measles and other preventable diseases worldwide. They attribute this resurgence to growing mistrust and skepticism towards vaccines since the COVID-19 pandemic. The WHO's website states that the UK's change in status reflects a broader challenge faced by the European Region as a whole.

France and Romania are among the European countries already experiencing regular measles transmission, according to the WHO. Canada lost its elimination status last year, while the US is working hard to maintain its status amidst rising infection rates.

The WHO's decision to revoke the measles-free status of certain European countries was based on data from 2024. The committees in each region use case rates to determine whether a country is measles-free. To be considered measles-free by the WHO, a country must have no locally transmitted cases of the same strain for at least 12 months.

The information was only released on Monday after receiving approval from all the countries involved. To effectively control measles, the WHO estimates that vaccination rates must exceed 95%. However, in the UK, only 84.4% of children received the two doses required for full protection in 2024. Government data revealed 2,911 confirmed cases in England that year, the highest since 2012.

On Monday, the UK Health Security Agency urged all children to get vaccinated to protect themselves from measles. The UK first achieved elimination status in 2016, only to lose it in 2018 and regain it in 2021. This ongoing battle against measles highlights the importance of maintaining high vaccination rates to prevent the spread of this potentially deadly disease.
