Brooks Koepka is making headlines by rejoining the PGA Tour, just five weeks after his departure to LIV Golf, and it comes with significant financial consequences that are among the most severe in professional sports.
Hailing from Honolulu, Hawaii, Koepka has committed to participating in the upcoming Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, signaling his return to the tour.
However, this comeback comes at a cost: he will be ineligible for PGA Tour equity grants for the next five years. Furthermore, he will miss out on any FedEx Cup bonus money in 2026 and won’t be able to participate in prestigious signature events unless he qualifies through competition.
As part of the financial ramifications, Koepka is also required to make a $5 million charitable donation, the specifics of which will be decided in collaboration with the PGA Tour. Essentially, the potential financial hit could amount to a staggering $50 million or more due to the loss of equity access and FedEx Cup bonuses this year.
Brian Rolapp, the CEO of PGA Tour Enterprises, detailed the terms of the so-called “Returning Member Program” in a memo sent to players, which was later shared with the Associated Press. He emphasized that this program is a one-off situation and does not set a precedent for future cases.
This initiative is available exclusively to players who have secured major championships or The Players Championship titles between 2022 and 2025. This means that only Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, and Cameron Smith—who are still part of LIV—can contemplate returning, and they have a three-week window to make their decision.
Koepka must earn his way into lucrative $20 million events, while ensuring that his entry does not take away a spot from another player on the tour. Importantly, the board, which includes a majority of current players led by Tiger Woods, approved this program.
Rolapp described Koepka’s situation as “unique,” and noted that the decision was made with an eye towards strengthening the PGA Tour, preserving opportunities for current members, and catering to fans’ desires to see the best players compete together.
That said, this does not create an easy route for other LIV players hoping to make a return. The tone of the program may resonate like an ultimatum for the remaining stars in the Saudi-funded league. Rolapp pointedly stated, "Only those who have recently achieved the highest accomplishments in the game are eligible to return to the PGA Tour, where the best players in the world compete, week in and week out. This is a one-time, defined window and is not a precedent for future situations. Once the door closes, there is no promise that this path will be available again."
Critics might argue that this approach seems to favor star players, a sentiment echoed in the PGA Tour’s history of prioritizing high-profile golfers through initiatives like the Player Impact Program and sponsor exemptions. However, these top players are constrained by a narrow four-year timeframe to secure significant victories.
Notably, several prominent golfers are not permitted to return under this program, even if they wished to. This list includes established names such as Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, seven-time LIV champion Joaquin Niemann, Ryder Cup competitor Tyrrell Hatton from England, and Patrick Reed.
Koepka, who has clinched five major titles, was among the high-profile athletes to join LIV Golf back in June 2022. He revealed during a 2023 podcast interview with boxer Jake Paul that he signed a contract worth at least $100 million, candidly stating, "I signed for the dough."
In a brief phone call, Koepka expressed some surprise at how quickly the PGA Tour allowed his return, saying, "I’m grateful it’s come to this." He acknowledged the mixed reactions among his peers, noting, "I’ve got a lot of work to do with some of the players. There’s definitely guys who are happy, and definitely guys who will be angry. It’s a harsh punishment financially. I understand exactly why the tour did that – it’s meant to hurt. But my departure hurt a lot of people."
Rolapp acknowledged the complexities involved in holding a defector from LIV accountable, particularly after they have received substantial compensation elsewhere. He stated, "Ultimately, by accepting membership in the Returning Member category, Brooks is making the decision to return to the PGA TOUR now – something our fans want, and something that strengthens both the game and our organization."
The financial consequences Koepka faces largely hinge on his performance and the value of the equity involved. If he maintains an average finish within the top 30 over the next five years and holds onto his equity shares until he turns 50, PGA Tour officials estimate that his potential earnings loss could range between $50 million to a staggering $85 million.
Despite these challenges, Koepka is back in the fold and will enjoy exemptions until 2028 due to his 2023 victory at the PGA Championship. He will also be eligible to participate in events like the Presidents Cup and the indoor TGL league.
Nevertheless, he cannot receive sponsor exemptions for the $20 million signature events; instead, he can only qualify through tournament victories or other current play categories. To ensure fairness for current players, Rolapp stated that Koepka would be added to the field of any tournament he qualifies for, including the FedEx Cup playoffs. Should he qualify this year, the tour would adjust the standings to accommodate him, ensuring he does not displace another player already ranked.
