Imagine receiving an email from your bank, excitedly announcing that they're increasing your interest rates! That's exactly what happened to customers of ME Bank, an Aussie subsidiary of the Bank of Queensland. The email, sent after the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) cash rate increase, stated that they were "pleased to announce" passing on the rate hike to their home loans. Talk about adding insult to injury!
But here's where it gets controversial... the email, which was posted on Reddit, sparked a wave of backlash and theories about how such a tone-deaf message could have made it through. One commenter suggested it was a simple case of using the wrong template, while others saw it as a clear QA failure.
"I think I might let them know that I’m pleased to announce that I will be changing banks," wrote one Reddit user, expressing their frustration.
And this is the part most people miss... ME Bank's original email also announced an earlier effective date for their rate hikes compared to Australia's major banks. While the big four banks will implement their hikes almost a week later, ME Bank's rates will be in effect from February 7.
ME Bank later sent out an apology email, acknowledging the "incorrect content" and the confusion it caused. They emphasized their commitment to clear and empathetic communication, which this email certainly lacked.
