Audi's Long To-Do List After F1 Barcelona Shakedown: Preparing for the 2026 Season (2026)

Why Audi Faces a Daunting Task After the F1 Barcelona Shakedown

The road to Formula 1 glory is paved with challenges, and for Audi, the journey has just begun. As the German manufacturer prepares for its inaugural F1 campaign, team principal Mattia Binotto finds himself in uncharted territory. He candidly admitted, "I've never seen such a long list of tasks ahead of us."

Audi's F1 debut is highly anticipated, especially after the full takeover of the Sauber squad. This move marks a significant shift in the sport, with the introduction of new regulations that promise to shake things up. The changes are substantial, affecting both the chassis and power unit, with the latter relying more on electrical energy.

To prepare for this monumental transition, F1 has scheduled an extensive pre-season test program. The Barcelona shakedown (January 26-30) was the first step, followed by two three-day tests in Bahrain (February 11-13 and 18-20). These tests are crucial for teams to iron out the kinks and get a feel for the new regulations.

Despite the extensive testing, Binotto acknowledges the magnitude of the task ahead. He emphasized, "It's a lot of work for the entire team, the drivers, and the engineers back home. Every detail needs to be managed and fixed."

The Barcelona shakedown didn't start without its hurdles. Technical issues with the R26, particularly related to the power unit, restricted the running of Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg on the opening two days. However, Friday brought a turnaround, with the team completing 148 laps, a respectable total for the week.

Binotto expressed his satisfaction, stating, "It's a fantastic project, and we're all committed. But we know there's a lot to build and grow."

The team's resilience was evident in Hulkenberg's words, who labeled Friday as their best day of the week. He highlighted the importance of the mileage and the lessons learned, emphasizing the need for analysis and reflection. "We have a lot of info to digest and regroup for Bahrain," he said.

As Audi embarks on this challenging journey, the F1 community eagerly awaits their progress. The question remains: Can they overcome the daunting to-do list and make a successful F1 debut? The answer lies in the coming races, where every detail will matter.
